Code42 Introduces Private-Cloud File Sharing to Keep Sensitive Corporate Data Out of the Shadows
Meets enterprise file sync and share demands for on-premises cloud deployment; a single console for managing backup and sync and share; and support for compliance initiatives such as HIPAA and SOX
Minneapolis — Oct 7, 2014
Code42, the leader in endpoint data protection and management for business and enterprise, today announced general availability of its new, fourth-generation endpoint data protection platform and a new version of its SharePlan enterprise file sync and share (EFSS) solution. The new platform and expanded EFSS capabilities support data security and compliance requirements unmet by consumer-grade sync/share and consumer cloud storage services—applications often referred to as "shadow IT."
"Many enterprises face the problem of unauthorized and unregulated use of consumer-grade file sync and share applications," said Matthew Dornquast, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) at Code42. "As a result, most expose sensitive corporate data to unnecessary risk. In fact, 81 percent of line-of-business employees admitted to using such unsanctioned Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications, according to a report by Frost & Sullivan. But it does not have to be that way—our solutions illuminate the data produced and stored on endpoints, and shared between them."
Dr. Tran Hong, associate vice president of technology for California Baptist University, agreed. "Many of our faculty and staff were using Dropbox for file access, and it was imperative for us to provide a secure alternative. We didn’t want to strong-arm users into switching, so our approach was to affirm users’ need for backup and sync and share, and show them that Code42’s CrashPlan and SharePlan—as a complete enterprise solution—was a better fit for the campus and our users. Once they saw how easy it is to use, and what it can do, they eagerly adopted the new technology."
"Our research shows that enterprises are looking for file sync and share providers that deliver on the promise of enterprise data security," said Jim Lundy, founder, CEO and lead analyst for Aragon Research. "Code42 is leveraging its heritage in secure backup and recovery, and extending it with SharePlan to deliver the enterprise security that enterprises need in a file sync and share solution."
Code42’s fourth-generation platform and SharePlan’s additional file sync and share capabilities combine advanced data security with an easy-to-use interface employees quickly, effortlessly master. Unlike consumer-grade solutions, Code42 offers organizations secure file sync and share via a single, enterprise-grade platform.
Secure, Private Sharing of Enterprise Data
Through the Code42 platform, SharePlan offers a private cloud deployment option for enterprises requiring on-premises storage of data and encryption keys. SharePlan supports data security/privacy and compliance requirements—such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) or the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX)—and utilizes PIN-protected links to ensure shared files remain private. Additionally, enhanced, out-of-the-box reporting and an open API empower IT and legal teams to easily monitor user access, link sharing, file locations and shared files.
Greater Visibility and Control for IT
Code42 IT admins rely on a centralized platform to manage all endpoint data backup and file sync and share across the entire organization. Through a single administration console, admins support an unlimited number of users, and easily adjust policies and security measures in real-time for both SharePlan and CrashPlan enterprise endpoint backup. Code42 also uniquely protects each version of every file, with no limits on version and storage.
User-Friendly Experience for a More Productive Mobile Workforce
SharePlan’s intuitive interface provides easy access to files, and lets users revert to older or deleted versions of synced files when necessary. End users enjoy a more consistent, reliable experience when accessing their data from any device or operating system—including Mac, Windows, iOS and Android. Regardless which device type is used, the Code42 user experience is simple and consistent from device to device.
"In the command-and-control world of the past where IT could simply impose technology mandates, usability and adoption once were considered afterthoughts," said Terri McClure, senior analyst for Enterprise Strategy Group. "Today’s user-driven business requirements, however, are changing all that. Code42 is one of the companies leading the charge, helping enterprises more easily bridge the gap between usability and control via an enterprise-grade file sync and share application that users embrace, and IT and security teams trust."
"When evaluating sync and share applications, it was clear Dropbox and other consumer cloud apps would be a constant headache for my team and me—as I suspect it is for most IT departments," said Jeff Hamer, director of IT at 360 Architecture. "Just because a tool is popular does not mean we can rely on it to store and transfer sensitive corporate data, or meet key compliance mandates. That’s why we chose SharePlan. With this application, Code42 followed through on its usability promise, while also delivering some of the most rigorous security and visibility functionality we’ve seen on the market."
Hamer continued, "The ability to manage both SharePlan and CrashPlan users from a single console means no matter how big we get, all that important end-user data is captured—but it all can be managed by one person. This makes it possible for us to properly protect our mobile users."
"Keeping user disruptions to a minimum while providing highly secure backup and file sync and share was our main goal when comparing solutions," Cal Baptist’s Dr. Hong concluded. "We appreciate working with Code42 as a trusted partner for both backup and file sync and share. Because CrashPlan and SharePlan are delivered on a single platform with a unified console, we receive the ultimate in data protection and a simple way to sync and share files while meeting data security and privacy best practices."
"One of the primary struggles faced by enterprises dealing with the consumer-cloud file sync and share dilemma is how to ensure corporate data stays private," said Dave Simpson, senior analyst for 451 Research. "SharePlan’s on-premises data storage option gives IT and compliance teams this much-needed reassurance. Once their data security concerns are alleviated, they can turn their attention to increasing the productivity of their internal ‘clients,’ in order to significantly impact a company’s bottom line."
"On-premises data storage; a single console for managing backup and sync and share; data security and compliance support—all customer-driven functionality in this product release that hit the mark for the enterprise and its mobile workforce," Dornquast concluded. "We already have seen a surge of interest from enterprise customers looking to solve their consumer-cloud conundrum. Our new platform and SharePlan sync and share enhancements give both IT and end users what they need."
