Code42 Celebrates World Backup Day with Release of Industry Trend Report on Endpoint Backup
New data reveals major deficiencies in corporate data protection

Code42, developer of award-winning, endpoint data protection and management solutions for consumers, businesses and the enterprise, today—on World Backup Day—released a study that reveals several important and potentially alarming trends in endpoint backup.
In a survey of 105 enterprise IT decision makers, the study found many end users store mission-critical data on endpoints—such as laptops or desktops—yet most companies do not have well-defined or closely followed policies for endpoint backup. The majority (60 percent) of respondents readily acknowledged that risk exposure and insufficient endpoint backup is a problem for their organization, with more than one in five respondents calling it a “big problem.”
“This report demonstrates why endpoint backup absolutely should be at the top of an IT department’s to-do list,” said Brian Bell, president and chief operating officer at Code42. “Endpoint devices are increasingly becoming both starting points and destinations for mission-critical data. As a result, organizations are increasingly at risk to lose sensitive data—from customer records and private personnel files to intellectual property and long-term planning documents. This easily avoidable vulnerability is no longer something that can be ignored.”
The study, executed by TechTarget, surveyed IT professionals at companies with 1,000 or more employees. It found:
- One in five enterprise end users store mission-critical data on an endpoint device such as a desktop or laptop.
- Only about 20 percent of those surveyed said their organization has a well-defined set of steps to help users back up data on their own.
- Most respondents said they are less than confident that all mission-critical data stored on users’ endpoint devices is securely backed up and readily available.
- Nearly one half of IT organizations are asked at least once per month to restore data on endpoints, and the average data restore requires approximately nine hours.
- More than 60 percent of respondents said insufficient endpoint backup is a problem for their organization, yet only about 20 percent said they have good tools and processes in place for endpoint backup.

Additionally in the survey, IT managers said they want an easier way to provide endpoint backup to their organizations. Nearly one half (45 percent) of survey respondents agreed with the statement, “We would make endpoint backup a bigger priority if we didn’t have to put the backup administration burden on our IT department.”
