Insider threat regret
UTEX Industries is a leader in the fluid sealing industry, serving the oil and gas industries.
Industry: Chemicals
Headquarters: Texas
Global Reach: United States, Brazil, England, Singapore and Malaysia
Employees: 425
Before completing Code42 deployment, UTEX Industries experienced an insider breach, when one of their lead chemists copied an entire directory of confidential formulas over to an external USB drive. Jeff Hiner, systems administrator at UTEX, explains that they would have caught this had they had Code42.
Critical needs
- Insider threat monitoring
- Detection for data exfiltration through USB
- Investigation capabilities
Without having monitoring and investigation capabilities in place, UTEX ended up hiring a forensics investigator to tear apart the hard drive in order to figure out where the lead chemist had copied the directory, and where the loss had occurred. This cost UTEX about $10,000 and took 3 weeks.
After all, UTEX was able to resolve the situation without a loss of IP. If they would have had Code42 deployed at the time of the incident, they would have been able to detect the data exfiltration in real time, investigate and recover the files much more quickly.
